Housing ignores elderly’s plea

"Go to the newspapers," official tells pensioners.

Despite residents’ complaints and a series of articles by the Record, the residents of Donovan McDonald Retirement Village’s problems persist.

Resident Joe Sadin invited the Record for the third time this year to come and see the challenges they face.

Problems that persist are that the grounds are being neglected and grass not being cut, a rat infestation and leaking water pipes.

Sadin has been reporting this since September 2013.

During his last attempt he allegedly was challenged by Housing’s area manager “to run to the newspapers, I do not care”.

Furthermore he was told that “we have given you roofs over your heads, what more do you want?”.

Sadin says the department is totally disinterested in acting on their pleas and shows blatant disdain towards the struggling pensioners.

To add insult to injury, the pensioners who receive a meagre state pension now also face eviction if they plant vegetables, according to Sadin.

The Record has tried to contact the official, her superior and the spokesperson for the department but without success.
