Successful start to 2014 — West Rand TM

The West Rand Toastmasters made a successful start to 2014.

Another year was kick-started successfully at the West Rand Toastmasters first meeting in January.

Lynnette Greenwoord, the club’s vice president of public relations, was proud to announce that another Competent Communicator manual was completed this January. The manuals consist of 10 speeches (CC10) and Helga Weiland is congratulated on her achievement.

“She delivered an inspirational speech with the title A brother in jail.

“Helga’s topic was multiple sclerosis, or MS, which she explained by demonstrating its effects with two different electrical wires – one with insulation and one without.

“She had us understand that myelin seals the neurons in the brain so that the correct path can be followed to receive information.

“In MS sufferers, this is not the case.

“Her speech pointed out that no matter your disability, you still can enjoy a successful life and still have the opportunity to achieve any goal you set your mind to.”

Greenwood explained that Toastmasters Nikki Quinn, Mra Nyo and Lebo Sebogodi also spoke during the meeting, discussing the topics Keep your club thriving, Following the Buddhist path and Human evolution demystified, respectively.

Toastmaster Shaun Goodbrand was awarded the Best Contributor trophy while Max Kaan received the Best Evaluator and the Best Table Topics trophies. Weiland was awarded the Best Speech trophy.

“We’re looking forward to our next meeting,” an excited Greenwood said.

The next West Rand Toastmasters meetings are on Thursday 6 February and Thursday 20 February. The club meets at the Florida Park Tennis Club on these nights from 6.45 pm. For more information, please contact Stephanie Greenwood on 082 925 3294.
