Princess informal settlement stages housing protest

Community takes to the streets once again during service delivery protest.

The stretch of Albertina Sisulu Road running past Princess informal settlement once again resembled a scene from a war-torn country on the morning of 14 January.

Residents from the settlement started their protest at around midnight by burning tyres, pelting vehicles with rocks and causing chaos. The SAPS and Public Order Unit (POU) had to be called in to restore order.

The atmosphere was calm when the Record visited the scene at about 11am. The smell of acrid smoke hung in the air, the road was strewn with burnt rubble, burnt logs and large concrete boulders, and shards of glass were seen everywhere. The police were still on the scene keeping an eye on the community.

An unofficial source within the SAPS tells the Record that they have not excluded the possibility that the protest will continue as soon as night falls.
