New running club in Roodepoort

"Their joining is beneficial to the sport" – Central Gauteng Athletics.

Road running welcomes a new club in the Roodepoort community after Ebenezer Athletic Club was accepted by Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

Mandla Radebe, General Manager of CGA in a letter welcomed the new club saying, “We would like to welcome you into the midst of the Central Gauteng Athletic family, and trust that you’re joining us will be beneficial to our sport”.

Alvin Otto, treasurer of the club expressed his joy and excitement following the approval, saying, “Our reason for having established a club is to make a difference in the lives of people, especially youngsters who want to run/ walk but also persons of any age.

“Our focus is on getting people fit, rather then just to compete. We want to make it clear that we are a club based on Christian values (not that we would reject those with other beliefs, who still are most welcome). The big thing for us is that one must have the passion to run.”

The club’s official colours are red and black and as far as the uniforms are concerned, Alvin says that this will be finalised soon.

The club is based at 64 Van Wyk Street in the Roodepoort CBD.

Time trials are every second Saturday at 7am. The first run for 2014 will be on Saturday 18 January. Runners will get together at Westgate Shopping Centre, Entrance 2, in the parking lot. From there they will walk towards the corner of Pheasant and Kingfisher Streets in Horison where the actual trial run will begin.

Runners will make their way right into Rietduiker Avenue, left into Volstruis Street, right into Albetros Avenue, left onto Newart Street, right into Crous Drive, right into Watson Street (becoming Quail West Street) and finally up Pheasent Street.

Available distances are 2,5km up to10km.
