Earth rumbles again in Roodepoort

Second minor earthquake in three weeks.

On 2 December and for the second time in three weeks, residents of the West Rand experienced minor earth tremors. It occurred at approximately 9.20pm.

The short, sharp tremors reportedly were experienced in Horizon View, Helderkruin, parts of Krugersdorp, parts of Pretoria and as far afield as Bela-Bela and Modimolle.

One resident described the occurrence.

“At first I thought there were knocks on my door. The next moment the windows rattled and it literally felt as if the room was shaking. I had a visitor who was just as alarmed as I was.”

A resident from Mindalore said that she “thought someone was moving my bed”.

The fact that the tremors could be felt as far away as Bela-Bela and Modimolle in Limpopo makes one question the theory that the excessive mining activities, which are part and parcel of the history of the Witwatersrand area, are the root causes of these mini-quakes.
