“They ran like dogs” – DA Chairperson

DA Chairperson calls cops on ANC councillor.

The latest news about the controversy involving the ANC allegedly hijacking a DA-organised event at Klein Helderkruin Old Age Home, is that things allegedly turned ugly after the Record had left the premises.

On the one side DA Councillor Suzanne Clarke and Christy van der Westhuizen, DA Chairperson for Ward 83 claim that weeks in advance they arranged for South African Social Services Agency (Sassa) to visit the old age home – only to find on the day that the star attractions were the MEC for Social Development and Agriculture, Nandi Mayathula-Khosa, ANC Councillor Willie van der Schyf and some ANC members.

Van der Schyf, on the other hand claims that it took him a month to arrange for the MEC to come and meet with the elderly.

When asked for comment immediately after the event Van der Schyf laughed off the accusations.

According to Van der Westhuizen he arrived shortly afterwards, confronting the ANC contingent and a member of the Roodepoort Older Persons Forum (who apparently also was persona non grata) as to why they were on the premises. He then warned them that he was going to call the SAPS and promptly did so.

In Van der Westhuizen’s words the ANC members “ran like dogs” and did not even bother to explain.

“They are busy with a campaign of disruption and intimidation in the area, ” says Van der Westhuizen.

“We have been receiving reports from settlements like Princess that residents are told to ‘vote ANC or else’. Allegedly on registration day they (the ANC) also intimidated voters who came to register at the Florida MOTH hall,” fumed Van der Westhuizen.

Asked for comment Van der Schyf replied to the Record in an email that he would “love to comment but can not on such vague accusations”. He went on to say that “if they want to make accusations they must be able to prove it”.
