Young ambitious musicians at Rumours

Meet Roodepoort youngsters Merrick and Jason (both 17) who have big plans with their music.

A new duo was discovered at Rumours Lounge in Weltevreden Park on the gig night of Friday 15 November.

The Rough Silence, a duo consisting of Jason Day and Merrick Kyle (both 17) shared the stage with bands such as Jet Black Camaro, the Black Cat Bones, Smokehouse and the Barking Trees on Friday. The boys, who attend the King’s School West Rand in Ruimsig, started playing music together at age 13 and plan on doing so for a long time to come. These Roodepoort residents plan on pursuing music on the coast.

“We want to pursue music studies in Cape Town after matriculating,” they tell the Record.

Merrick jokes that he “took air guitaring to the next level” and says that he always enjoyed music and performance arts.

Jason, equally amusing, says that he was forced into playing piano but found his true passion in playing guitar as well.

They list their influences as an amalgamation of Rodrigo y Gabriela, Pink Floyd, Black Country Communion, AC//DC, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and JS Bach, “to name a few”.

“We’d like to think that our music is as broad as our influences,” they say, explaining their genre as a smorgasbord of blues, jazz and classical technique.

In the past few weeks they have been a regular feature at Rumours Lounge and secured a slot in the Lounge’s infamous New Year’s gig. They are looking forward to playing at local venues more often.

“You can catch us at Rumours Lounge and Tanz Live this December.”
