Protea Coin Group guard shot in armed robbery

One injured as three armed men storm cash boxes.

A security guard of the Protea Coin Group had to be rushed to hospital following a cash-in-transit heist at the BP service station at the corner of Albertina Sisulu (old Main Reef Road) and Kroon Street on Wednesday afternoon 18 September.

According to Colonel Chris Wilken of the Roodepoort South African Police Service (SAPS), “At around 12 noon, a Protea Coin Group truck was in the process of collecting two cash boxes. Just as one of the security guards was about to exit the shop at the garage, three men armed with 9mm pistols appeared from nowhere and opened fire. The guard was wounded in the left foot and face.

“The suspects then managed to flee with the cash in a silver Hyundai. The amount is unknown.”

It was said that first to attend to the injured security guard was Dowry Security’s medical team, who soon was joined by ER24 paramedics. SAPS, Joburg EMS, Dunmar Security and the SAPS K-9 Dog Unit were also on the scene.

One police officer gave the Record the cold shoulder, saying “the law says you are not allowed to take photographs”.

Neither a Protea Coin Group representative nor ER 24’s Christo Venter wished to give comment on the scene, describing the events as too sensitive.

More details will be made available soon.
