Welcome to the Relay For Life

Residents are invited to join Cansa and other support groups at this year's Relay For Life.

Those who were lost to cancer will never be forgotten and survivors and residents have the opportunity to show their support for the fight against this thieving disease this November.

Jill Hallet, Florida resident and an activist in the fight against cancer brought news about an important local event to the Record’s attention.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) will be hosting its highly exciting Relay For Life event on the West Rand on 2 November at Monument in Krugersdorp.

What is a Relay For Life and what would it mean for the current and ever-growing struggle against cancer?

According to Hallet, Relay For Life is a unique event that offers the West Rand community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

“It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and that those facing cancer will be supported.

“One day, cancer will be overcome.”

Relay For Life comprises members of various teams taking turns to walk around a set track for 12 hours right through the night.

“Participants usually enjoy the camping out, entertainment, good food, games and camaraderie.

“The community of participants all have a common purpose – their desire to fight cancer and to support Cansa in its work.”

Hallet described Relay For Life as a celebration of life for cancer survivors and the opportunity for communities to join forces in the fight against cancer.

“I have so much fun attending it that I see it as an excuse to stay up all night and celebrate life with my family and friends.”

The event consists of the Survivors’ Lap, the Luminaria ceremony and the Fight-Back ceremony that is held at midnight.

Hallet encourages residents to rally up for this promising event. “Gather your tents, sleeping bags and warm clothing and join us this year.”
