Child (9) dies after being knocked over by car

Paramedics say boy suffered extensive injuries in accident.

A nine-year-old boy died after a motor vehicle ran him over in Horizon View on Friday night 2 August.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann, “Paramedics responded to an accident on Pamela Street in Horizon View, Roodepoort on Friday night.

“Upon their arrival on scene they found that a nine-year-old boy was knocked over by a motor vehicle.

“Tragically the boy died at the scene due to the extensive injuries he had sustained during the accident.

“Exact details to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.”

Michael Leon of the Horizon View Blockwatch described the incident as a tragedy.

“The incident happened around 6.15pm. The young boy was cycling down Drysdale Avenue when he was struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Drysdale Avenue and Pamela Street.

“Metro Police and Emergency Services were on the scene within a few minutes of the accident. Members of the Horizon View Block Watch were dispatched to try and locate the child’s parents as well as manage the traffic at the scene. Emergency medical personnel battled for over an hour to save the young boy’s life but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene of the accident.

“The Horizon View Block Watch extends its sincerest condolences to the parents and family of this young child. The thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with them during this difficult time.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear and a police investigation is in progress.

“The unfortunate incident once again highlighted the importance of instilling a culture of road safety among our children from an early age. Wearing an approved bicycle helmet, high visibility clothing and obeying traffic signs are of the utmost importance.

“The Horizon View Block Watch wishes to thank everyone involved in managing the incident on Friday night. These include the JMPD, SAPS, emergency services, patrollers from our neighbouring block watch and residents who provided coffee and support at the scene.”
