Young artist’s paintings take you on a journey

The former Florida now Bosmont resident has been an artist all her life.

She may be young but her pieces of art tell incredible stories about life and the appreciation of nature.

16-year-old Nikesa Lowe is an upcoming force to be reckoned with in the art fraternity, as she has started exhibiting her work in local flea markets, social media, and is soon to display her pieces in art exhibitions and galleries.

Nikesa, who attends at the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein where she gets to specialise in her love of art, said she fell in love with sketching and painting at a very young age. “I’ve been painting since I was young. I remember in grade 0 when we would be given a piece of paper to draw, I used to draw a photo of myself painting,” she recalled with a smile.

The former Florida now Bosmont resident has been an artist all her life. She said she also draws her inspirations from well-known artists and poetry if nature simply has nothing to offer at that present moment.

“Apart from nature, Vincent van Gogh (a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art) keeps me inspired,” she explained. She added that artists in her age group on Instagram also influence her growth.

Nikesa also touched on her plan to expose herself in the art world. This choice was motivated by the good reception that she received from Capetonians who have been following her growing talent.

“I want to expand my work and begin shipping my work to interested buyers. I also want to brand myself using social media, market days and even start a YouTube channel, a platform I will use to share my craft globally,” a determined Nikesa said as she unpacked her dreams.

Recently, she was part of the CVRA Christmas market on Eland Street in Allen’s Nek, where visitors could not get over her work. Nikesa, who can take up to five hours to produce a piece (depending on her mood and material), showcased her work for the first time in an art exhibition set up at the Crayons Art Exhibition in Maboneng (Johannesburg Central).

Her proud mother, Cindy Lowe, told Northsider that she enjoys seeing her daughter living her dream. “It’s nice to see her living her dream. Whatever she needs pertaining to art, she asks for advice,” said Lowe. It’s no doubt that Nikesa got her talent from her mother after she revealed that she also used to be an artist in her youth.

“We are very proud of her. She is very disciplined and business-minded. She knows when to study and she likes to inspire other young people to do what they are passionate about,” she praised Nikesa.

Nikesa concluded by sharing the prices of her work. She said pieces vary from R100 to R500 depending on the size and material used.
