Young scientists take on Eskom Expo
Three Allen Glen High School learners experience the Eskom Expo.
For the first time, a number of Grade 9 learners from Allen Glen High School have entered the Eskom Expo for young scientists.
The learners were tasked with entering a project using a scientific process, and three learners took up the challenge and attended the recent regional competition.
Mpho Siminya’s project was on edible packaging. The project looked to end the litter crisis by uses silver leaf foil and rice paper as packaging materials. Mokgadi Mutamba made an organic cellphone charger, which was selected to go through to the national round in October. However, she plans to change her project for the national round on advice she received from the regional judges.
Kwandile Mkhize won a bronze medal for his investigative project where he created a survey on whether or not individuals are less likely to accept an item or service for free. Kwandile offered his peers apples, books, hugs and even money, and discovered that people are less likely to accept anything from a stranger.
Science teacher, Willem Odendaal, was very happy with the learners’ results. “It’s great, considering it was their first time entering. I hope they will continue to enter till they are in Grade 12, as the quality of the projects will only improve,” he said.
