Trick or treat in the streets

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Welview Resident's Association holds Halloween walk to bring community together.

Olive, Gentian and Gousblom streets in Weltevreden Park looked a little different this past weekend. Not because any roads changed, but because about 150 community members came out for a fun dress-up walk hosted by the Welview Residents Association in celebration of Halloween.

Chairperson of the association, Tana Cope said the goal for this walk on 29 October was for the community to get together and enjoy time getting to know one another. “Many residents said it reminded them of their childhood,” said Cope.

She added that it was a highlight to see the amount of effort that the children put into their costumes and how proud they were to show them off. Some parents joined in the fun as well. Cope explained that some of the residents set up stalls on the route to hand out sweets and treats to people passing by. “I saw some children leaving with loaded bags and buckets, buckling with the amount of sweets they gathered,” she said.

Cope said that events like these are important for the community as it is an opportunity for people to enjoy each other’s company. “With so much negativity out there, it was a breath of fresh air to spend my evening with laughter and excitement in the air,” said Cope.

She added that she would like to thank Londoloza Protection Group for keeping the community and the little ones safe in the streets during the walk.
