Calling all cosplayers

MULDERSDRIFT – Cradlestone's cosplay competition sees enthusiastic and imaginative players and costumes.

Cosplay enthusiasts were invited to show off their costumes at Cradlestone Mall as part of a gaming tournament that will span two months.

The creative individuals dressed up and were judged on 4 June, on detail and also on their knowledge of the character. The event is part of four events, the others taking place at Greenstone Shopping Centre and Northgate Shopping Centre with the finals being held back at Cradlestone Mall.

This first leg of the competition saw a small turnout but all the outfits were well-thought out. Johann Grobler dressed as Sub Zero from Mortal Kombat X, a costume that took him eight months to complete since everything was handmade and included 30 buckles and real steel knives.

Wesley Williams took his costume to the next level by creating his own character and a backstory to fit in with the Star Wars series in the time of the Old Republic.

Judge, Mariska de Bruin from Gaming Entertainment Solutions, said, “This is a very new event for Cradlestone Mall and what is great about it is that it is for everybody. I have enjoyed what the cosplayers have had to offer. Accuracy counts for more in the larger competitions but we were not as strict.”

Darryl Linington from IT News Africa, who was also on the judging panel, added that he was happy that an interest and a decent level of cosplay was being shown.

Winners of this round were Johann Grobler as Sub Zero, Wesley Williams as Darth Kraan and Mike Fletcher as Darth Maul. The next round will be held at Northgate Shopping Centre on 11 June.

Three more cosplayers will be selected from each centre to go through to the finals to be held on 9 July. Prizes up for grabs start at R7 000 for first place, R5 000 for second place and third place gets R3 000.
