Update: Third case of rabies confirmed

MULDERSDRIFT – People urged to get their domestic animals vaccinated after third case of rabies in three weeks.

A third case of rabies in a three-week period has been confirmed.

On 31 May, a local veterinarian confirmed a third case of rabies in Renosterspruit, Cradle of Humankind. According to Conserv Security the infected animal, a jackal, was killed by dogs.

This came as a shock after two previous cases of rabies were reported. On 11 May a case was confirmed in Kalkheuwel and on 24 May a second case had been reported after a jackal, that acted strangely walked into a business complex. It has been confirmed that the jackal was infected with rabies.

Trevor Roberts from Conserv Security urged people to get their domestic animals vaccinated as soon as possible. According to Roberts, people with small holdings should also get their staff vaccinated as well. “We urge people to report cases of rabies as we cannot know the extent of the problem if we do not get the information,” said Roberts.

If one encounters an animal that is acting strangely, they are urged to report it to a local vet, the state vet or to Conserv Security.
