High level intervention in Ward 126

WELTEVREDEN PARK –Massive turnout by entities sees a ward revamp.

A high-level intervention by City of Joburg entities was held in Ward 126 to focus workforces on issues inside the ward on 20 April.

The large workforce included Pikitup, JMPD, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), City Parks and Zoo, Social Development, City Power and Environmental Affairs. Ward 126 Councillor Mike Tonkin explained that the convergence of the groups is a mass scale operation to address issues such as green belts, grass cutting, bylaw enforcement, litter and rubbish removal as well as faulty street lights.

“I am pleased and satisfied with the turnout, especially the large numbers from each entity, which denotes a positive response to the cries of residents in Ward 126,” added Tonkin.

Urban inspector for Region C, Linda Hlatshwayo thanked them for their patience and for all the work they do in Region C. “Very often the work you do, goes unnoticed by residents and we applaud you for keeping our community safe and clean. It is days like this that help us as urban inspectors to accurately layout issues within the region,” added Hlatshwayo.

JRA workers began by trimming the huge palm trees outside the Weltevreden Park clinic and cutting the extremely long grass surrounding the clinic and tennis courts. JMPD made their way around the ward taking down illegal advertising and confronting bylaw infringements.

City Power checked street lights that were faulty and offered their services to residents with billing queries. A massive hotspot in Ward 126, the river flowing through Excell Park was cleared of debris and Bugweed masses were cut down.

The programme went on throughout the day and covered areas from Devon Valley all the way up to John Vorster Road. The joint operation will hopefully ensure the Ward’s cleanliness, visibility and safety.
