Residents clean criminal hideout

STRUBEN’S VALLEY – Residents cleared bushes and trimmed grass at various crime hotspots.

Members of a recently formed My Neighbour Resident’s Association, embarked on a task to clear the bushes along the greenbelt in their area as it provided a hideaway place for criminals.

Residents from Wilgeheuwel and Struben’s Valley trimmed the bushes to make the area from the corner Krugerrand to Sovereign roads more visible from a distance, on 10 April.

This clean-up initiative was subsequently done after an electric cable was stolen near the greenbelt, leaving residents without power for hours.

The cable thieves had allegedly dug up a 3m deep trench which was 50m long from 5 to 8 April.

They allegedly stole the cable which left the suburbs in darkness after one of the substations tripped on the morning of 8 April.

City Power worked throughout the night until the power was restored on 9 April.

My Neighbour Resident’s Association (MNRA) director, Elaine Sutherland said the clean-up was done in order to tackle the dense bush so that thieves would have no place to hide.

Prior to this clean-up, residents from Little Falls and Struben’s Valley, who are also members of MNRA, cleaned the pavements on Hendrik Potgieter Road. They cleared long grass and bushes.

“We aim to prevent another murder on this pavement and want it to be a safe environment for all,” Sutherland explained referring to the gruesome incident which occurred in the area where a woman was allegedly raped before she was murdered.

She mentioned that local business owners and residents pooled their own money to buy petrol and hire brush cutters. “All the residents who attended had fun while cleaning,” she said.

MNRA have members from Struben’s Valley, Wilgeheuwel and Little Falls and is a non-profit organisation. This RA encourages neighbours to do good deeds for each other. “The membership is free. If we have jobs that require cash, we all contribute to pay for the costs,” she concluded.
