Malicious attack aimed at Ward 70 councillor leaves multiple residents injured

On August 23 a malicious attack during a public meeting ensued which left numerous residents who were in attendance injured.

A pre-meditated invasion during a public meeting on August 23 hosted by Ward 70 councillor Caleb Finn left multiple Florida residents injured.

In a statement issued by Finn on August 24, he said late yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, a horrific incident occurred after a group of people wielding pickaxe handles invaded a community meeting taking place at a hall in Fleurhof.

It is alleged that these individuals were seemingly intoxicated and were brought on the back of two bakkies.

Naturally, chaos ensued in the hall and a stampede followed which left multiple residents injured during the attempt to evade the scene.

“People were badly injured due to the stampede, and some were also directly injured by those wielding the pickaxe handles. In addition to this, the hall and its contents also sustained damages,” Finn said.

During this attack, it is alleged that some officials were also physically assaulted and hit several times. According to Finn, most of those injured have managed to go home from the hospital with one person remaining in the hospital to undergo surgery today (Thursday).

Florida Community Policing Forum cited that 12 suspects were caught and taken by Florida police and noted that further investigations are already in motion to apprehend the suspects that fled the scene.

Residents who attended the meeting all voiced their concerns with some who said that they condemn such acts and others encouraging Finn to lay charges against these unlawful elements. Police confirmed that a case of assault, with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, was opened and said that the investigation is ongoing and progress will be reported.

Reasons as to why this attack happened are still unclear at this stage with Finn stating he does not want to speculate.

Further details will be communicated once the investigation has concluded.
