Everything is right on track with Roodekrans’ black eagle chick
The black eagles of the Roodekrans Ridge are right on schedule with their breeding cycle this year.
The breeding pair nesting on the Roodekrans Ridge inside the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden have been feeding and raising their chick since early June.
The monitors from the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) have been monitoring the chick’s development religiously while also educating visitors to the garden about their history and breeding cycles.

On July 18, monitors noticed that Makatsa and Mahlori were perched in trees on the East Ridge and only made their first move just before 9:00.
“The chick eventually showed itself and Johann van den Berg managed to snap a shot from below the Waterfall,” explained Dougie Crewe, a volunteer monitor for BEPR.
According to the monitors, the chick was 44 days old on July 19.
