Claw sterilises many dogs and cats to prevent unwanted litters

The animal rescue centre in Durban Deep along with LetsSpaySA and Saints Animal Charity did their part to prevent more animals from being abandoned.

Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) helped to prevent many unwanted litters of puppies and kittens on July 7 when the animal rescue centre sterilised 50 dogs and 10 cats.

Michelle Weedman from Claw said, “We work with dogs in our community that need to be sterilised, obviously to prevent more unwanted litters and also for health reasons as well. One of the protocols in the clinic is that any dog that comes in for treatment has to be sterilised. So once our dogs are vaccinated or recovered from treatment that they were having then they come in for sterilisation.”

She explained that a sick or unvaccinated animal cannot be sterilised, therefor they only do it afterward. They also have volunteers helping out on the day when the animals are recovering.

Ludwig Geyer, one of the volunteers, added that he checks the dog’s heartbeat and makes sure they can breathe. He uses hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound and prevent infection. He also covers them with blankets as the anesthetic can make them shiver and calms them down when they are starting to wake up after the surgery as they can be quite disorientated.

Weedman concluded, “We could not have done this without the support from the sponsors, LetsSpaySA and Saints Animal Charity.”
