To commemorate World Earth Day, April 22, each section of the Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel campus had an opportunity to outdo their fellow learners. The pre-primary, primary school, and high school each had their eco-themes to work with and the day featured the planting of trees, a decorating of the hallways, and an emphasis on recycling.

The Castle, the name given to the pre-primary school, focused on the slogan Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Parents were challenged to dress their little ones in outfits made of recyclable materials.

“We were blown away by the creativity. Some haute couture outfits were being worn, even a pair of shoes fashioned from milk bottles. Our children wore their outfits made from newspapers, black bags, plastic packets, and even reusable shopping bags with pride,” said The Castle’s Principal, Megan Gaertz.

Primary school learners and their teachers held a classroom door decorating championship. Each door was a mural in honour of the importance of our planet. Competition was fierce and judging intense and the six-teacher panel decided that Mrs Joubert’s Grade 5 E1 class was the winner.

Getting in tune with the soil, the high school learners planted a succulent garden.

“This shows that everything can flourish when given the right grounding. We chose a succulent garden in celebration of what the succulent represents, although facing many adversities and not always being deemed to be the prettiest it will always persevere and will always grow through any storm and any hardship it will still bloom,” stated Megan.

As part of the initiative, the school appealed to learners, parents, and staff for plants and pots to give the campus a facelift.

“We were astounded by our parents and learners’ generosity. We received donations that will benefit our learners for generations to come,” said Megan.

New additions include two orange trees, succulents, various outdoor plants, a hibiscus tree, an avocado tree, and a lime tree.

Megan and the rest of the staff extended a heartfelt thank you to every learner and parent who shared their mutual interest by donating items to enhance the children’s learning environment. Quoting Lady Bird Johnson, Megan concluded, “The environment is where we all meet; where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.”
