The promise of a fresh start and the addition of promising talent has Roodepoort Rugby Club eager for the start of the coming season. Kicking off their Pirates Grand Challenge campaign with two away games at Wanderers and University of Witwatersrand on April 15 and 22, respectively, the squad has already been fine-tuned with several preparation matches.

The aim this season will be to reach the finals of the Pirates Grand Challenge and Poorte will bank on a few fresh faces. Kewan Gibb adds experience having played for Wanderers and Pirates’ first teams as will former Golden Lions Amateur’s Theunis Muller who will be swapping Alberton for the Hoërskool Bastion-based club. Dylan Mostert will be another Lions Amateur addition and Craven Week graduate Elrico Swart will add depth to the scrumhalf stocks.

Youth will be on Poorte’s side as they welcome a host of university talent. Anton Gerber joins from the University of Witwatersrand while Justin Lambert from North-West University is welcomed to the squad. The University of Johannesburg provides two new faces, Riaan de Jager and former South African schools captain, Tristan Dullisear. Poorte’s first home fixture will be against Alberton on May 6 after the Workers’ Day long weekend.
