Tournament underway to decide Weltevreden Park Tennis Club’s doubles champions
Nine teams will play each other once each for spot in the semi-finals
Two racquets are better than one when running the tournament gauntlet.
Punctuating a busy calendar, Weltevreden Park Tennis Club began their doubles championship on July 23. Nine doubles pairings will go head-to-head once in a round-robin carousel with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. Match days will feature several matches with each duel being a best-of-three-sets clash.
The early rounds were jovial encounters but the intensity increased as the urgency to get points on the board soon overcame the comradery. All business from the start were the pairing of club chairperson Yusuf Coovadia and Stephane Duponsel who registered three opening-day wins from three attempts without dropping a set.
The pair of Morne Burgers and Hoosein Khan could provide a stiffer challenge down the road as they too went home unbeaten after a tight third set tie-break win against Andre Arendse and Madikana Chokwe. The coming weeks will whittle down the challengers in anticipation of the final showdown in mid-August.
