Discovery Bowls Club woman to represent South Africa at Commonwealth Games

Thabelo Muvhango joins Leases' Bridget Calitz and Witpoortjie's Tracey Smith on plane to England

Tickets are booked, bags are waiting to be packed and the nerves are building.

Discovery Bowling Club will be proudly represented in national colours come the end of the month. Thabelo Muvhango will be one of three players from the Sables District to be selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. Joining her will be Leases Bowling Club’s Bridget Calitz as well as Witpoortjie Bowling Club’s Tracey Smith.

Bridget was part of the national team that went to the 2018 edition in Australia while Tracey has been a perennial champion in the visually impaired division for almost two decades. This will be the first taste of the international stage for Thabelo and while anxious, can not wait to hit the English greens. “I felt so happy. I am so excited and can’t wait to play,” beamed the 22-year-old, revealing how she felt when she heard the news.

Team South Africa returned from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia with three silver and two bronze medals, and Thabelo is hoping they can go one better in August and return to South Africa and Sables a champion. Bouncing in anticipation, she said, “We are going to go there and enjoy ourselves, but do whatever we have to to bring back the gold”.
