Roller pigeons the stars of the 40th anniversary

'The auction went well, with guys picking up some good birds at bargain prices.'

Die Westerse Birmingham Rollerklub (WBR) celebrated their 40th anniversary with a roller pigeon show and auction on Saturday, May 21.

The auction was well supported, despite the inclement weather.

According to Otto Pretorius, they had hoped for more people to attend, but because of the inclement weather on the day, that was not to be.

Those who did come out to join them were not disappointed, as they were able to pick up some good roller pigeons and other items at the auction.

The roller pigeon show was also something to behold, and Otto managed not only to bag the prize for the best bird on show, but he also won best in class, one second place and two third places.

Otto Pretorius won some prizes in the bird show.

The club came into existence in 1982 when seven members had a shared vision to develop the Birmingham Roller pigeon, improve the quality of the pigeon and its performance, and to hold competitions to further the interest in the hobby.

Today, 40 years later, the WBR has gone from strength to strength with members excelling both locally, nationally and internationally with their quality birds. Some birds were imported to improve the local gene pool.

Otto explained that the Birmingham Roller pigeon is a performance bird and is often referred to as the acrobat of the sky with its breathtaking rolling or somersaulting. Competitions are judged by the quality and depth of the roll.
