Watch: WSNBG black eagles live on webcam

"We are very excited that we once again have a webcam and will be able to monitor the eagles at all times."

Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) has announced that the live web cam is back and that eagle enthusiasts will be able to view the nest from the comfort of their homes.

In the beginning of December last year BERP photographer Ernest Porter told the Northsider that the installation of the new live camera was planned for mid-December and that from the coming breeding season black eagle followers will be able to watch from home live what is going on in the nest.

According to BEPR photographer and observer Johann van den Berg, when Makatsa arrived in 2016, she decided to build a new nest far away from the webcam they had at that stage.

“We are very excited that we once again have a webcam and will be able to monitor the eagles at all times.

“Modern technology will enable us not only to focus on the nest, but also to zoom in on other activities around the nest,” explained Johann.

BEPR commissioned Africam to set up a web camera on the nest in the past, and since the new female arrived in 2016, they haven’t had a camera to view the new nest.

According BEPR monitors, the eagles might not be visible all the time as they are only at the beginning of the breeding cycle.

Viewers might get a glimpse of Makatsa and Mahlori bringing sticks to the nest in the mornings (07:00–10:00 SA Local Time) and usually egg-laying happens in April/ May, meaning that viewers will be able to spend hours watching the eagles in action.

The last sighting of the juvenile Amari was on December 26 last year and both adults are now enjoying their ‘rest’ period, flying from one ridge to the other without the interference of a juvenile.

BEPR monitors continue chatting to many visitors about the possible future plans of the eagles, and have decided to start the Tuesday morning monitoring again.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden and chat to the monitors in the waterfall basin.
