iLead wins by playing its part

i-Lead Self Defense was awarded the Women Empowerment award at the 2021 Play Your Part Awards held recently.

i-Lead Self Defense was awarded the Women Empowerment award at the 2021 Play Your Part Awards held recently. Play Your Part is a nationwide movement that works to empower, inspire and celebrate active citizens. The category aims to highlight programmes that uplift, protect and empower women mentally, physically and socioeconomically.

Founder of i-Lead Risha Harie said they entered when nominations in the category opened due to the inspiring work done by Play Your Part. “We are honoured to receive this award. Brand South Africa is a force for good and we highly respect their opinion. Even though we have received the award, the actual win is for the sector at large. Incredible organisations are working every day to combat gender-based violence. Being able to show impact using Empowerment Self Defense, we hope to inspire other martial artists to join the movement.”

Harie is very proud of the violence-prevention programmes they have put together for the community, and hopes to see more women and youth attend them.

The Muldersdrift resident shared her excitement after the win. She said the award would give them more visibility and greater reach. “My first thoughts went to our amazing team of sponsors, partners and volunteers who work to drive i-Lead forward. I am thankful for all the hard work they put in, it is greatly appreciated. I believe our success is built on everyday people wanting to help their fellow South Africans flourish. Imagine the impact you can have!”

i-Lead provides free self-defence classes for women and children, mostly in disadvantaged communities.
