Brave men take to the streets in purple Speedos

This year the event attracted thousands of brave men from all walks of life to do their part to raise awareness about male cancers.

On Friday, October 15 thousands of men in purple Speedos took part in the Hollard Daredevil Run 2021 with other teams of purple warriors spotted in Roodepoort bravely showing off their inner Daredevil.

What started 12 years ago with one brave soul running through peak hour traffic in a Speedo to raise awareness about cancer has since become a nationwide phenomenon.

The event, which raises funds towards prostate and testicular cancer awareness and screening, saw runners including some from Panorama Running Club based in Eagle Canyon take off from Discovery Bowling Club and Ontdekkers Road, Florida Park (IFAnet Office).

“As part of our business we deal with cancer claims on a daily basis, and one of our staff members is currently on treatment for cancer, so this is very real to us.

“This was a very good opportunity for us to support a worthy cause to create awareness about cancer in a fun way.

“What made this year more unique is that we were limited to small teams because of Covid-19 restrictions, but that made it possible to get different groups involved. We even got the Gauteng underwater hockey players to participate in a daredevil swim as a prelude to the run,” said Managing Director at IFAnet and spokesperson for the Roodepoort Daredevil Run, Bennie Naudé.

Usually held as a mass participation event in Johannesburg every year, the Daredevil Run 2021 was a Covid-19 edition national event taking place around the country, with participants running 5km in a host of different locations.

This year the event attracted thousands of brave men from all walks of life to do their part to raise awareness about male cancers.

All proceeds go to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa towards awareness and screening of prostate and testicular cancer.

“This is a run with a difference that makes a difference. The Hollard Daredevil Run has been a highlight on the South African social calendar since 2009, attracting thousands of brave men from all walks of life to do their part to raise awareness about male cancers,” said Heidi Brauer, Chief Marketing Officer at Hollard.

Most South Africans know someone affected by prostate or testicular cancer – the bottom line is that early detection saves lives.
