Seven shacks burn to the ground

The cause of the fire that left numerous families distraught and homeless remains unclear.

Seven shacks were burned down in Taxi House informal settlement on August 4, leaving numerous families distraught and homeless.

Matias Tchunguwe, a resident in the area believes the fire started by accident. “I don’t know what started it because we don’t have electricity; maybe it was a gas stove. Seven shacks burned down including mine. Everything is gone, we are suffering right now. Our blankets, food … they are all gone. We don’t have anything to fix what’s left, there is no money.” Neither he nor his wife suffered any injuries, and they are now staying with a next-door neighbour.

Community members have been assisting the residents by lending them clothes and letting some of the victims stay in their rooms. Shenan Cochrane from Muldersdrift Cares said they would be working with the CPF to assist families. “We will be doing collections. These families need donations such as clothes, food, utensils etc. People can drop off donations at Harvest Feeds on Drift Boulevard.”
