Sponsor a test and save a kitty

A kitten sanctuary is appealing to community members to donate or sponsor crucial Fiv/Felv test kits

Kitty Kazz kitten sanctuary is in dire need of Fiv/Felv test kits for all the kittens they rescue and re-home. Owner, Karin Donald says the feline Aids tests are essential to ensuring that all their rescued animals are tested before being adopted.

“The test can be conducted with a blood sample from the ear, and then you put it in the test and that will show a positive or a negative for feline Aids or feline leukaemia,” she explained. “We need to know that we are homing healthy kittens to the families. Although cats can be healthy throughout having leukaemia and feline Aids, symptoms can only show up later in their lives.”

Both conditions are contagious to other cats, thus testing is extremely crucial. Karin added that leukaemia can be spread through saliva, faeces, urine, blood and other bodily fluids. “Feline Aids is the easier one, as they can live full, happy lives with Aids but with leukaemia, they can go down quite quickly,” she added.

The test can be purchased from veterinary clinics and costs around R1 500 for a box 10. Karin said she is eager to get sponsors who can assist with purchasing the test kits to ensure that they keep re-homing kittens safely.
