Nine suspected criminals set on fire in Zandspruit

Medics who arrived at the scene found nine men bound and lying in the middle of the field near a smouldering tyre. A large gathering of community members circled the area.

On Wednesday, 19 May four men were killed and five others critically injured in an alleged mob-justice incident in Zandspruit.

It is alleged that the nine suspected criminals were set on fire by an angry mob who claimed that they were tired of their community being victimised.

Medics who arrived at the scene found nine men bound and lying in the middle of the field near a smouldering tyre. A large gathering of community members circled the area.

After assessing the men, medics found that four had already succumbed to their numerous burn wounds.

Very little could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene. Five other men were found with multiple burn wounds and were in a critical condition.

The surviving men were treated, provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to nearby provincial hospitals for urgent care.

The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities, CPF and community leaders were on scene for further investigations.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed the incident and that it was under investigation.

Roads around Zandspruit were unaffected; however, there were reports of congestion on Marina Drive.

Member of the public are advised to avoid Marina Drive until the scene has been cleared and the situation has calmed.
