Roodepoort SPCA confiscates two pit bull puppies with severely docked ears

Case opened against owner of pit bull puppies

Man’s best friend is often subjected to the type of abuse we would not wish on our worst enemies. For every loving animal owner there is a careless being who uses defenceless dogs for their own twisted pleasures and macabre motives.

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA was alerted by a police officer to possible mistreatment in Bram Fischerville, Soweto. The police were carrying out their routine work on Tuesday, 11 February, when they discovered two pit bull puppies of which the ears were removed. Police led the SPCA to the scene, and they confiscated the dogs in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

The owner of the puppies had several elaborate excuses, initially stating that he needed to remove the ears as they were infected. He then allegedly changed his tune, saying that rats had chewed off the little pit bulls’ ears. It is against the law to remove a dog’s ears and the puppies now need surgery to rectify the mess.

Mandy Cattanach, Manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA was fuming. “It is totally and utterly against the law to do any cosmetic surgery on an animal. If vets were to do it, they would lose their licence. If anyone is caught doing so, we will prosecute!”

Cattanach was adamant that this would not be tolerated and asked for the public to always share information that could lead to improving the life of an abused animal.
