Wide eyes and huge smiles adorned the faces of the adorable children who walked through the gates of Laerskool Horison on Tuesday, 14 January for their first day of primary school.

The Grade 1s came to school a day earlier than everyone else to meet their teachers and get a taste of where they would be filling their little heads with knowledge for the next seven years. Coming in one day before school officially started meant that the little ones could meet each other, explore the school, and learn the ropes of Laerskool Horison without the chaos of learners from six more grades.

The learners were welcomed by friendly teachers and stunningly decorated classrooms, and despite the stories we usually hear about crying and screaming on the first day of school, these six and seven-year-olds were smiling from ear to ear. Each of them was dressed neatly in their new uniforms; hair brushed and shoes polished, ready to start a new chapter in their lives.

In the classroom, friendships were already being formed and everyone’s personalities were quickly coming into the light. The smiling, and passionate teachers made each learner feel welcome and safe, making sure to fill them with excitement for their first year in ‘big school.’
