Trial of man accused of decapitating his sister to start this week

Murders believed to be part of satanic sacrifice

The trial of murder accused, David Mashoa, is set to commence this week in the South Gauteng High Court. Mashoa is accused of decapitating both his brother and sister in separate incidents in or near their Roodepoort home.

In August 2018, Mashoa was arrested after his sister was found decapitated at their home in Roodepoort. Investigations lead to two witnesses alleging that Mashoa had confessed to killing his brother in a similar fashion in 2012. His brother had been found next to a railway line between Georgina and Krugersdorp in early December 2012.

Mashoa is facing two murder charges as well as a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was expected to plead guilty on Monday, 21 October, but the hearing was postponed to the following day, when the accused announced that he wished to change his plea. Mashoa was advised by his counsel to stick with his guilty plea but the matter was again postponed, this time to Thursday 24 October, after the accused was struck down with an acute spate of stomach cramps.

Senior State Advocate Deon Van Wyk, prosecuting counsel in the case, confirmed, “Should the accused decide not to plead guilty, the State will lead evidence on two confessions and will allege that the motive for the murders was that of a satanic sacrifice”.

The accused will return to the South Gauteng High Court tomorrow, 24 October, to enter his plea.
