Poorte digs deep for victory

The score as the first half ended was UJ ahead by 15–10.

On Saturday, 11 May, Roodepoort Rugby Club took on the University of Johannesburg Rugby Team in a tightly contested match that was played at the UJ Rugby Stadium.

Poorte came into the match with their second team already setting an example of what a victory should look like by registering a convincing 38–5 win over the UJ outfit. Eighth man, Pieter Mathews, had some very good takes in the line outs and secured good quality balls for the team.

In the early stages of the game, Poorte was unfortunate to have to make an early substitution and replace lock forward, Jojo Tshivhase, due to an injury. UJ then registered the first points of the match through the accurate boot of their number 12. The Poorte forwards played a tight game among themselves and had their loose trio join the back line at times, resulting in a well-worked converted try. The score as the first half ended was UJ ahead by 15–10.

More action came from both sides in the second half, with both teams testing each other with the high ball. A loss of concentration by Poorte resulted in an interception by UJ’s fullback, Darryle Kameel, who went on to score under the poles for a converted try.

Poorte’s inside centre, Byron Godfrey, replied with a well-worked try, displaying strong running and seeing great support play by the team. Tighthead prop, Ian Pottas, also had to be replaced in the early stages of the second half.

Poorte had to dig deep in order to maintain its unbeaten run, and scrumhalf Migael du Plessis forced his way over the try line to secure victory for the Roodepoort side.

The final score was 25–22 in favour of Poorte, having manned up against a very determined UJ side. Captain Wesley Pretorius showed character and guided his troops to a well fought for victory.
