Florida fire station gets a new fire engine

Look forward to a faster respond time from the Florida fire station.

”The new fire engine will assist in terms of response time,” said Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS)’s spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.

Florida’s fire station received a brand-new fire engine at a recent hand-over ceremony. The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba; the MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, and the acting EMS Chief, Mhlengi Makhubalo all took part in the hand-over. The delivery of the fire engines forms part of the Department’s efforts to replace the ageing fleet at various stations.

“The Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Management Services has received four fire engines – two newly purchased and two that have undergone full refurbishment, bringing them up to a standard that is as good as new,” said Sun.

One fire engine was allocated to each of the following fire stations: Florida, Lawley, Ivory Park and Eldorado Park.

“Acquiring these fire engines forms part of the City’s commitment to building safe communities and therefore a safer city,” said Sun.

“When we have resources, it’s easier for the firefighters to respond on time to calls,” said platoon commander Sydney Kadwell.

Ward 85 councillor, Sonja Meyer, and Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, also attended the hand-over.

Sonja said, “I have lived in this ward for 27 years and seen the lack of maintenance to the fire engines. This is why I am so happy to see the new one”.

“This is a step forward for the city,” said Caleb. “I grew up in this area, so it’s very close to my heart. I think the staff at the station are dedicated to their work.”

Mayor Mashaba ended the proceedings, saying, ” It is the city’s responsibility to make sure that our officials render good service to residents. We are trying by all means to eliminate bad service.”
