Be on the look out for one coloured woman and two black men going around defrauding people.

Shantel Masimang said she recently saw a car outside her gate. “Two black men were busy with the water meter while a coloured woman waited in the car. When I asked them what were they doing, they told me that the water had been cut off, and I had to pay them R1 000 to get it turned on again.

They were holding papers with the Johannesburg Water logo, but I suspected that this was a fraudulent document, so I told them to go before I called the police. When I started taking photos of them, the woman called for the men and they left. One of the men is named Bongani,” Masimang said.

“I told a friend mine what had happened and she said it happened to her as well. She gave them the R1 000 and they turned the water on. My friend was very shocked to hear that these people were just scamming her,” she said.

Johannesburg Water’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Isaac Dhludlu, said, “If people say they are working for Johannesburg Water, ask them to show you their identification cards. Should they refuse to do so, call the police immediately because they are not our employees.”
