Giving the gift of sight

Three patients received free eye surgeries

Three Roodepoort residents received a priceless gift at the Advanced Health Medgate Centre recently.

The hospital group decided to offer patients free eye surgery, as part of their drive to promote good health care, as well as to give back to the Roodepoort community.

Doctor Tristan Mann, one of the surgeons, performed cataract operations on Hassen Laher, Robert Jones and Rayleen Batten, to help restore their eyesight. He explained, “Over time, some people develop an opacification in the lenses of their eyes. Cataract surgery is the process of removing these natural lenses, and implant artificial intraocular lenses in their place, enabling the patient to clearly see through the affected eye again.”

Rayleen had cataracts on both her eyes, which is, according to Dr Mann, not abnormal, and she received her second eye surgery. “It would be such a blessing to be able to have sight in both my eyes again,” Rayleen said, ahead of her life-changing operation.

Dr Mann added that the surgery changes seemingly small things for patients with cataracts, but it has a huge impact, making a big difference in their lives. “After the surgery, patient are able to watch their favourite television shows without glasses and take up their hobbies again,” he said.

The patients were asked to describe how the surgery will enhance their daily lives. Ronald said he is looking forward to getting back to his oil paintings (a privilege he has been without for more than year) and Hassen said he would be able to drive on his own again and recognise people from a distance.

Dr Mann concluded with the following words, “Thanks to Advance Health’s drive to give back, these patients will have a new lease on life as their eyesight is restored. And the best part is that it’s just in time for Christmas.”
