Furry friends need help after West Rand storms

Roodepoort SPCA and Claw need your help

The staff at the Roodepoort SPCA and Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) are appealing to the community to assist in the aftermath of the storms that occurred on the afternoon of 9 October.

According to Mandy Cattanach, the manager at the Roodepoort SPCA, they suffered some damage to the property, but luckily no fatalities or injuries were reported. “The storms caused a huge tree to be uprooted and fall on our paddock wall, resulting in a section of the wall being totally demolished. The roof of the stables as well as the charity shops were lifted, causing them to leak very badly,” she said.

She added that the pouring rain and hail resulted in the bedding of all the cats and dogs being drenched. “We gave all our animals extra blankets to make sure they stay warm in the cold. We would appreciate it if the community could help us with carpeting, blankets and cat beds. The items can be dropped off at our offices situated at 3 Nadine Street, Florida,” Mandy said.

Taren Welthagen from Claw confirmed that they did not suffer any damages or fatalities, but did suffer flooding. “Although everyone – human and animals – is alright, everything is wet. We have lost all of our newspapers, the dog food is soggy, and the blankets that are not wet, were swept away by the wind. We would appreciate any donations of blankets, old newspapers and dog food,” she said.

“All donations can be dropped off at our offices in Durban Deep. Alternatively, Takealot works really well for delivery of food and blankets, or we can also arrange for drop-off points in Honeydew and Northriding,” she said.
