COJ announces rates and tariff increases

This is how much you will pay for municipal services

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has announced the annual tariff increases for domestic property rates, electricity, water, sanitation services and refuse removal.

The CoJ has introduced a step tariff for electricity and water services, meaning that the more water and electricity residents consume, the more they will pay. This is being done in an attempt to benefit those who use the least water.

The six kilolitres of free water that all customers received in the past falls away. Users who have registered on the Expanded Social Package (ESP) will receive between 10 and 15 kilolitres of free water monthly, and all other

customers will now be charged an additional R42,82 to cover the cost of the formerly free first six kilolitres used.

The tariff increases, effective from 1 July, will impact residents as follows:

• Water and sanitation services increased by 12,2 per cent and customers not using pre-paid meters will pay between R7,14 and R38,72 per kilolitre, depending on how much water they use. Pre-paid water consumers will pay between R5,87 and R44,16 per kilolitre, also depending on their usage. All users will be charged a water demand levy of R20.

• Basic sanitation tariffs for domestic dwellings will be between R171,97 and R729,70 per month, depending on the size of your property.

• Basic refuse removal service costs have been increased by 6,2 per cent, which means that residents will pay between R118 and R303 per month, depending on the value of their properties.

• Electricity tariffs have increased by 2,28 per cent. Customers using pre-paid electricity will be paying between R1,1616 and R1,7348kw/h, depending on electricity usage. Customers not using pre-paid power will be paying a

monthly service charge of R114,57, a monthly network charge of between R337,52 and R462,33, plus between R1,1065 and R1,5091kw/h, depending on usage.

• Seasonal tariffs have also been implemented, meaning that residents will be paying between R1,0523 and R1,4550kw/h during summer, and between R1,2555 and R1,6581kw/h during winter, again depending on usage. These tariffs have been split according to time of use, as follows:

• During summer, residents will pay R1,3416kw/h during peak time, R1,0612kw/h during standard time and R08,349 kw/h during off-peak time.

• During winter, these tariffs will be R3,0865kw/h during peak times, R1,2644kw/h during standard time and R08,922kw/h during off-peak times.
