Warning: Davidsonville protests turn violent

Residents abandon attempts to get to work.

Several residents abandoned their attempts to get to work this morning after the Davidsonville protests had escalated into violence.

The Public Order Policing (Pops) unit, formerly the riot police, have taken over from the police. Rubber bullets have allegedly been fired to disperse rioters who vandalised property, pelted motorists with rocks and set tyres alight. All entrances to Davidsonville – Van Wyk Street, Randfontein Road and Nick Toomey Boulevard – had been closed.

The riots allegedly are about service delivery.

Although the police dismissed the Record’s request to enter the area, the journalist will attempt to do so. Residents are sternly warned to avoid the area at all costs.
