Florida church calls for action

Congregation used Palm Sunday procession to show their support against corrupt Government

A local church in Florida used their annual Palm Sunday Procession to convey a message of support to the majority of South African citizens.

“The St Gabriel’s Anglican church congregation used the opportunity to show we are standing in solidarity with the country’s protest against the corrupt governing of our beautiful land,” said Wayne Saldanha, the church’s minister. He added that the decision to add the extra element to the annual procession was made in response to a call from the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg. “Bishop Steve Moreo urged the Anglican community of Johannesburg to stand together,” he said.

He said that the streets of Florida are already the ‘home’ of many poor and homeless people and the current state of the country as well as the worsening economy will only result in more people having to live on the streets. “This also means there will be an added strain on the already limited resources of our church, as we seek to fulfill our mandate to feed the poor,” a concerned Wayne said.

The congregation members were all in agreement that they – like the majority of South Africans – had also had enough of the dishonesty, corruption and hypocrisy of some of the political leaders. “Especially the actions of our country’s President, Jacob Zuma,” said Wayne.

He concluded by saying, “We, as a community of faith, stand in hope, and know our country will be resurrected to new and abundant life once again. We urge all the people (Christians and other religions) of Florida to pray for our country.”
