Archers hit bulls-eye

Top archers compete for glory

More than 200 archers competed arrow for arrow in the recent Inter-club Archery tournament. It was Inyala Archery Club’s very first time hosting the competition that looks to find the most talented archers in the province.

The competition was held on Laerskool Dr Havinga’s sports field and featured clubs and teams from all over Gauteng. Among them were eight primary schools and 11 high schools.

National Archery in the Schools (NASP) deputy chairman Frik Birkenstock was in the audience cheering on the young archers giving their all for a chance at glory.

”The competition was wonderful, well organised and well attended. Every important aspect of hosting a tournament was attended to, especially when it comes to safety. It is always great to see young archers pushing themselves to perform at their best,” he said.

Archers had to compete in the 10m and 15m shooting range and winners were calculated on a points system.

Inyala Archery Clubs’ ace Magdel Wilhelm was almost flawless in her performance in the senior category. She won a silver medal, just two points shy of a gold medal.

Inyala’s head coach, Magda Wilhelm, was one of the adjudicators of the competition and she was impressed at the level of competition that had the audience excited.

“Being the hosts was stressful but it was worth it. Everything on the day went well and our archers all represented the club with great aplomb. The season has been going well for us and we are growing from strength to strength each time we compete in these competitive tournaments,” she said.

The club is still looking for talented young archers to train, especially girls from Grades 3 to 12. For more information, contact 082 712 5744.
