Pelser trial date to be set at next hearing

Important piece of evidence finally obtained.

A crucial piece of evidence in the Marthinus Pelser case, the handwriting analysis, has finally been obtained, after eight months.

Pelser, 22, who appeared again via audio visual remand (AVR) today, 23 February, stands accused of having murdered his six-month-old baby, Deon, in June 2016. At the scene, a diary was found in which was written “Do not look in the cot” and “I am sorry for what I have done”. The prosecution needed to establish whether this was in fact Pelser’s handwriting. Although it was announced in court today that the analysis has been completed, the result was not disclosed. The trial could not commence until the analysis had been done.

At his next appearance, on 23 March, a trial date will be set.
