This comes following the staggering number of accidents reported in the past two days.

EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, said paramedics have responded to a several fatal and minor crashes in most parts of Gauteng. At least one person has died on the M3 highway following a severe accident on 21 February.

JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, said the number of accidents that have happened in the past two days is double the number for an average day. He also said motorists should remember that it takes longer to bring a vehicle to a standstill on wet roads.

The downpours are said to have also resulted in many serious traffic jams. Motorists are encouraged to be patient when driving during harsh weather conditions and to alert local authorities of areas that have been affected.

The South African Weather Service said residents of Gauteng should expect the rain to continue, with heavy showers expected to resume on Thursday, 23 February.
