Residents will be relieved to hear that their concerns and frustrations regarding long grass alongside our roads have been noted by the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

The Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba, said that the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) met to address the issue of over-grown grass and vegetation city-wide. “I am pleased to announce that JRA has issued a purchase order for R4 million to JCPZ and cutting should commence as soon as possible. A list of all prioritised roads per region will also be circulated to all stakeholders as a matter of urgency,” Mashaba said.

According to Mashaba, in the past, a number of different departments were tasked with grass cutting and vegetation control which made the whole process cumbersome and impractical. “We are in the process of ensuring this responsibility is centralised to fall under the JCPZ. We have no doubt that this will dramatically improve the existing state of affairs,” he said.

The councillor for Ward 70, Caleb Finn, was very pleased with this announcement. “Good news was received today in the sense that JRA has transferred approximately R4 million to JCPZ to assist with the grass cutting on the sidewalks. For those who don’t know, JRA is responsible for this task, but they contract it out to JCPZ. I have submitted quite a few street names which are in desperate need of grass cutting, but, if you know of any others, please feel free to contact me and I will add them to the list,” Finn said.

Mashaba concluded by saying, “While the City’s grass cutting and vegetation control budget is limited, we trust that the R4 million allocated towards this purpose will make a significant difference in the overall appearance of the City.”
