Breaking: Joost van der Westhuizen dead

Died at home among family.

The former Blue Bulls and Springbok scrum half legend Joost van der Westhuizen passed away earlier today.

Van der Westhuizen would have turned 46 on 20 February. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition on Saturday when his major organs started to fail due to motor neuron disease (MND), with which he was diagnosed in 2011.

On Sunday it was announced by his J9 Foundation that he has stabilised and that his condition has improved slightly, but a short while ago the Foundation announced, “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Joost. He passed away in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He will be sorely missed.”

Van der Westhuizen played in 89 tests for the Springboks between 1993 and 2003.
