20 things never to say to a teacher

Be warned – teachers hate hearing these things

With the new school year starting soon, teachers once again will be spending most of their time with our children, teaching them important things such as reading, writing and much more.

But, often we tend to forget the importance of the work they do by saying or doing things that might imply their work is insignificant. Have you ever wondered what teachers hate the most?

The website, www.boredteachers.com, suggest 20 things never to say to a teacher – whether you are a parent, friend or just an innocent bystander:

1. My kid is easily bored, is your class going to be interesting?

2. Maybe you should try doing more fun activities during your lessons.

3. My taxes pay your salary, which means technically I am your boss.

4. I am going to quit my desk job and do something easy – like teaching.

5. I wish you cared as much about my children as you do about your salary.

6. It must be nice to be paid to read books to children, colour pictures, play all day – and have four holidays a year!

7. Tests are excellent tools to see if teachers are doing their job right.

8. If you are a good teacher, you won’t complain about having too many learners.

9. You give too much homework. Just because you have nothing to do after school doesn’t mean my children have all the time in the world to spend on homework.

10. I’m pretty sure it can’t be too hard to teach children how to read and write. I can do it.

11. My son isn’t doing well in your class, what are you doing wrong? (This question is usually asked by a parent that took his children on a two-week holiday in the middle of a school term).

12. Maybe you should spend less time decorating your classroom and more time on your lesson plans.

13. I’m sure I can be a teacher too as I went to school for 17 years.

14. Teaching sounds easy – you only have to work 10 months a year.

15. My son/ daughter never misbehaves at home, maybe your class is a problem.

16. Oh, you teach kindergarten? I used to babysit, too.

17. If you spent more time teaching in class, maybe you won’t have to give so much homework to make them learn the material at home.

18. Are you doing anything important in your class this week?

19. How can you not have enough time during the day? You finish your work at 3pm.

20. Maybe you should get another job during holidays and work for 12 months like normal adults.

Never underestimate the power of a teacher. After all, they teach tomorrow’s leaders, which makes them kind of important.
