Stern warning issued to law breakers

MMC for Public Safey, councillor Michael Sun launches Festive Road Safety Campaign

“We want to make this festive season a safe and crime-free one. We will not tolerate any criminal activity or the breaking of the rules of the road.”

This was the message from the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, at the launch of the Festive Road Safety campaign on 6 December.

The campaign, which is a joint operation between the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Emergency Management Services (EMS), Johannesburg Disaster Management and the police, is part of the city’s mission to prevent crime, by-law violations, highjacking, robberies, theft, fires, floods, emergencies and disasters.

According to Sun, the JMPD, with the assistance of the police will patrol the streets and man roadblocks in every corner of Johannesburg to protect law-abiding citizens. “Criminals will have nowhere to hide during the festive season and motorists who fail to obey the rules of the road will also have to face the full might of the law,” Sun said.

Sun reiterated that they want to make the festive season safe and crime-free by not tolerating any criminal activity or breaking of the rules of the road. Sun, and the chairperson of the Section 79 Public Safety Committee, councillor Hilton Masera, distributed pamphlets at a taxi rank and urged taxi drivers to drive safely during the festive season.

The festive season is the time when normal business activities end or scale down, and it is also the time in which many people go on leave and travel to places of entertainment, recreation and shopping. Criminal activity increases during this period, with criminals targeting shoppers, businesses, homes and children, which means the police and the JMPD must be on high alert with an increased visibility on main roads, highways and exit routes.

He said that there is a great disregard for the rules of the road during this period, resulting in loss of lives or serious injuries. These accidents are usually caused by reckless driving, drinking, and speeding – especially on wet roads. According to Sun, this will not be tolerated.

Residents were also urged to use fireworks in a reasonable and considerate way – keeping the by-laws in mind – and not cause any harm to themselves, others or animals.

He concluded by saying, “I have full confidence in the ability of the men and women of the JMPD and the EMS to carry out their work effectively and efficiently.

We also have the use of closed circuit television to assist in the fight against crime.”
