Eight men will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court after they kidnapped three women and tortured them.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said they received a tip-off about a kidnapping on Tuesday (29 November). At about 6pm they went to the house in question in the suburb of Cresta. On the premises they found three women who had burn marks and signs of having been tied up, as well as eight men. The women were rescued and the men arrested.
The women were allegedly kidnapped at a mall after they had fallen prey to the so-called ‘black dollar scam’. The scam involves the victims being told that if they give the scammers a certain amount of money, it will be multiplied. They are given a box with instructions not to open it until a certain amount of time has passed. The box is supposed to contain their multiplied money, but when they opened it, they find it filled with shredded paper.
It is uncertain at what stage the women were kidnapped.
